Music

St. Benedict’s uses hymnody, plainchant, and choral music to give glory and honor to God in our worship. In choosing its repertoire, the parish draws from the venerable musical resources of the Western Church.

Sunday Masses and important feast days are accompanied by organ, with congregational hymns sourced from the 1940 Hymnal. Members of the parish serve as cantors to chant the psalmody. We are blessed to have an enthusiastic singing congregation, with ample opportunities for all to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” (Psalm 100) during the liturgy.

A vocal consort sings polyphonic settings of the Mass ordinary, as well as motets during Offertory and Communion, approximately once a month. The consort comprises experienced professional ensemble singers from the Triangle. Renaissance polyphony is most often sung, with recent repertoire including works by Antoine Brumel, Duarte Lobo, William Byrd, and Heinrich Isaac. A complete music list for upcoming Masses may be found below.
